What is the difference between ODM and OEM in PCBA production

The ODM and OEM models in PCBA production are different. ODM emphasizes comprehensive services from design to manufacturing to meet customized needs; OEM focuses on efficient production and is suitable for bulk demand. There are differences between the two in terms of brand, intellectual property, and cooperation mode.

The biggest difference between ODM and OEM is design control. ODM manufacturers have independent design capabilities and can design products according to customer needs; OEM manufacturers, on the other hand, rely entirely on the design drawings and specification requirements provided by customers. In terms of brand ownership and intellectual property, ODM products are usually sold under the customer’s brand, but the design copyright may not fully belong to the customer; OEM products, on the other hand, belong entirely to the customer, including brand and design copyrights. In actual cooperation, customers can choose the appropriate cooperation mode according to their own needs. If customers require highly customized products and services, ODM mode is undoubtedly a better choice; If the customer already has a mature design solution and pursues cost control and production efficiency, then the OEM model is more suitable.
